Introduction/Brief description of course: This advanced level course is designed for the serious art student who intends to further their studies in art after high school or is preparing a portfolio for review as part of their application process for college. Students need to be motivated, self-disciplined and able to adhere to the rigors of the assignments in an independent class format. Students will apply the knowledge from prerequisite art classes in completing their portfolio requirements to graduate.
Administering course requirements: Students will complete the required number of assignments issued to them at the beginning of each quarter. Time management is the focus with an emphasis placed on challenging the student to produce art that has been inspired by the knowledge attained in previous lessons and independent research. Students will complete each assignment in the time allotted.
Evaluation of progress: Students are expected to set the standards for their peers who are learning to manage their time in an open classroom setting. Independent thinking is encouraged when doing art and students are challenged to be active participants in the critiquing process both for self-evaluation and in learning the “art” of imposing constructive criticism on others when assisting their junior peers with their artwork.
Each student will be required to submit to their e-file at least one computer generated assignment. They will be active participants when choosing the assignment they are to complete.
Each student, each quarter, is required to submit an independent project that reflects eight to ten hours of study outside of the classroom. Assignments must fit into the criteria administered. Deadlines are to be met to attain the highest grade possible.
A community art project is also required to be completed by the end of second quarter. This requirement has been established to create community awareness and to also instill in our students the importance of giving back to our community. This project is to be approved by the teacher prior to completion and documented by the supervising agent when completed. Students who have not completed their project by this time will be assigned one. All completed services will be graded during 3rd quarter.
Books/Materials: Various reference materials are available in the classroom. The department subscribes to several art periodicals and an extensive collection of art books are available on loan in the BG Library. I-pad use is required and encouraged for reference and inspiration, NOT to be copied.
