Introduction/Brief description of course: This course is designed to encourage those who have the desire to further their knowledge and abilities in the visual arts. Developing the strengths of those who show strong potential is the emphasis, and to better prepare those who intend to pursue their education in the arts or direct their careers in the commercial arts.
Administering course requirements: Students will explore various mediums (graphite, pen and ink, watercolor, acrylic, etc.) that will reflect the knowledge of previous examples seen in prerequisite classes, Art Appreciation and Art Theory. Students who have not successfully completed these classes prior to their junior year must have written approval by the instructor. Students must be willing to uphold the rigors of the class assignments in a timely manner. Ongoing stimulation comes from the desire to create art in a self-disciplined environment.
Evaluation of progress: Students are encouraged to give and accept constructive criticism in an open format in their quarterly critiques. This gives students an opportunity to talk about art and to learn the importance of self-evaluation. Building self-awareness and esteem is the intent of this process.
Each student, each quarter, is required to submit an independent project that reflects eight to ten hours of study outside of the classroom. Assignments must fit into the criteria administered. A community art project is also required to be completed by the end of the third quarter which is to be approved by the instructor prior to completion and documented by the supervising client when completed. Students will be assigned a project to complete if it has not been completed by deadline. Grades for this project will be posted during 4th quarter.
A sketchbook and limited materials purchased will be required to complete the assignments however; there are always tools available in the classroom. Preparedness for each class day is expected and evaluated when determining the student’s effort to participate and succeed. Students are evaluated on a 10-50 point scale with approximately five long–term assignments administered.
Books/Materials: Various reference materials are available in the classroom. The department subscribes to several art periodicals and an extensive collection of art books are available in the BG Library to be used on loan. I-pad use is required and encouraged for reference and inspiration, NOT to copy others work.
